The Reese family’s journey with St. James began during a challenging period. Ny’Yira and her younger brother, Terrance were attending a charter school that abruptly closed due to financial issues. Then their mother had a chance encounter with a St. James staff member who was recruiting in the neighborhood. Ny’Yira and Terrance started at St. James the following fall. Mom Freda and Dad Terrance, Sr. agree that decision greatly influenced their children’s educational and personal growth. Freda, who has over 13 years of experience working in public schools, notes the advantage of a small private school like St. James: “I love that my children received one-on-one attention from teachers who were always pushing them to do their best.”
Although Ny’Yira graduated in 2019 followed by Terrance in 2021, the Reeses still hold St. James School close to their hearts. For Freda, the St. James difference is summed up in one word: family. “It’s still like a family,” she says. “Most schools, once you graduate, that’s it. Even though Ny’Yira is in her second year of college, we’re still getting calls, “Does Ny’Yira need anything?”
Freda also notes that once you’re a St. James parent, you’re always a St. James parent. She loves how former students sometimes gather at her home and affectionately call her mom. “Once you’re connected, you’ll always be connected. My kids have built lifelong friendships,” she says.
Ny’Yira, now a sophomore studying social work at Morgan State University, aspires to become both a social worker and a realtor. Terrence is in the 11th grade at TECH Freire Charter School, with dreams of attending Penn State.
Both frequently return to St. James and visit the Huskies Hangout (our graduate lounge) for help with homework, summer job opportunities or to reconnect with classmates and staff. “If I ever need a little getaway, there’s no second thought about visiting,” Ny’Yira shares. “They always make sure that I have good opportunities, whether it’s finding a job or anything else.” This past summer, Ny’Yira had a full circle moment when she was chosen to be a graduate counselor at NorthBay Adventure Camp. The role brought back many memories of her own NorthBay experiences as a St. James student. She was excited to connect with current students and be a role model “because I’ve been in their shoes,” she says. Freda’s advice for parents considering St. James is, “Go for it! If you want your kid on the right path at a young age, it’s the right place.”
