[TMI]—The Board of Governors of TMI—The Episcopal School of Texas, San Antonio, Texas, has appointed John W. Cooper, Ph.D., to become the school’s next headmaster. He will join TMI on July 1, 2012.
“Dr. Cooper is recognized as an exceptionally intelligent, energetic, and accomplished leader, educator, and fundraiser,” said the Rt. Rev. Gary Lillibridge, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas and chairman of the school’s Board of Governors. “We look forward with confidence to the vibrant leadership he will bring to the TMI community.”
For the past 12 years, Cooper has headed Elgin Academy, a private school in Elgin, Illinois, outside of Chicago, where he oversaw significant increases in enrollment, annual giving, endowment, and student achievement. He also supervised the fundraising and construction of a new Media, Science and Fine Arts Center, which earned Gold-LEED recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Previously, he was headmaster for six years of Wichita Collegiate School in Wichita, Kansas, and was dean for academic affairs and associate professor of philosophy and religion for five years at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia.
“TMI has a phenomenal reputation for preparing students for success,” said Cooper. “”I am honored to have been chosen to lead the TMI community on its continuing journey.”
Cooper earned his doctorate in religion at Syracuse University and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in religion at Florida State University.
TMI’s previous headmaster, James A. Freeman, Ph.D., retired at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. Since then, Walter Spencer, former head of TMI’s middle school, has served as interim headmaster.
