Storytelling Teacher

The Episcopal School in the City of New York
New York City, NY United States

The Episcopal School in the City of New York, a traditional early childhood program, is hiring for the position of Storytelling Teacher. The Storytelling Teacher will lead classes for children ranging in age from 2.5 to 5.5 years old. The Storytelling program at Episcopal aims to engage children with stories and language, offering them the opportunity and structure to develop their own modes of oral expression and communication. The stories chosen for the program include folktales as well as original stories. Stories are retold specifically for each age group incorporating vocabulary, rhythms and repetition that make the stories exciting and understandable for the young listeners. The stories lead to a variety of language and story experiences that further the language arts goals of the program.

The Storytelling teacher also leads the Chapel program. Chapel provides a specific time for children and families to strengthen the community of The Episcopal School family through the singing of songs and sharing of stories. The Storytelling teacher uses Old and New Testament bible stories and folktales to expose young children to the values we share as a school, including: how to treat others, sharing, respect for feelings of others, honesty, responsibility, and respect for similarities and differences. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to sit with their children and participate.

The Storytelling Teacher’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Maintain a professional attitude, practice ethical behavior and provide a pleasant, safe and orderly class environment.
• The general supervision and management of children.

• Implement a curriculum that supports the language arts program and is aligned with the School’s Core Curriculum.
• Organize and lead our weekly Chapel program.
• Attend faculty meetings, curriculum meetings, and other school meetings.
