DESCRIPTION OF ROLE
Episcopal Day School (EDS) is seeking a dedicated and passionate Middle School Music Teacher & Advisor for the 2025-26 school year. This educational leader will bring energy and enthusiasm for music education, fostering a love of music within a vibrant middle school community. The ideal candidate will enrich the student experience by integrating music in meaningful and impactful ways into the broader life of the school. With a strong foundation in music education, this teacher will inspire and engage students through dynamic instruction and foster resilience, confidence, and a growth mindset.
This position involves teaching middle school music classes, directing choirs, and supporting music-related extracurricular programs, such as clubs and performances. The teacher will create opportunities for students to explore their musical potential, build technical skills, and engage in collaborative and creative experiences. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the music teacher will serve as an advisor to a small group of students, fostering their academic, social, and emotional growth through personalized guidance and support.
This is a full-time, ten-month faculty position reporting to the Middle School Division Head.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach 5th and 6th-grade general music and offer electives for 7th and 8th-grade students that deepen musical understanding, enhance performance skills, and inspire creativity.
- Guide students in developing vocal and instrumental techniques, nurturing their ability to read, interpret, and appreciate music while encouraging creative exploration and innovation.
- Establish and direct choir programs for middle school students, providing collaborative, ensemble-based learning opportunities while fostering a love for choral singing through real-world experiences and performances.
- Develop and support music-related extracurricular opportunities, such as clubs focused on songwriting, instrumental ensembles, or music technology, that expand students’ engagement beyond the classroom.
- Apply effective classroom management strategies, utilizing the Developmental Designs curriculum for Middle School approach to create a respectful, collaborative environment.
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, fostering their academic, social, and emotional development and advocating for their growth toward “responsible independence.”
- Collaborate with colleagues to enrich the middle school experience and provide a cohesive support network for each student.
- Communicate proactively and positively with parents to keep them informed about student progress and achievements.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and reflect on teaching practices to ensure continuous improvement.
- Participate in grade-level overnight and day field trips designed to enhance students’ learning experiences and support their social-emotional growth.
- Support school-wide events and activities that contribute to a positive school culture and fulfill all professional responsibilities, including supervision and reporting.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALITIES
- Bachelor’s degree in music education or in a closely related field (minimum).
- Experience teaching middle school music, with expertise in both vocal and instrumental instruction.
- Ability to direct choirs and support performances in chapel and other school events.
- Genuine interest in and understanding of middle grades child development and respectful management techniques.
- Proficiency in differentiated instruction strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
- Strong communication skills for effectively engaging with students, families, and colleagues.
- Commitment to continuous professional learning and implementation of chosen programs.
- Ability to approach varied responsibilities with enthusiasm, creativity, integrity, flexibility, and humor.
- Openness to collaboration with colleagues across grade levels.
- Technologically literate, with the ability to integrate technology as a tool for effective teaching and learning.
