Purpose: The lower school literacy coach is responsible for supporting student achievement in the areas of reading, phonics, writing, word study, and spelling. The literacy coach works with the HOL, Associate
Head of Lower School, and Director of Academic Innovation and Faculty Growth to oversee the LS literacy curriculum and work with teachers in Kindergarten-4th grades.
Qualifications, Skills, and Behaviors:
● Master’s degree in reading preferred
● Trained/proficient in multiple reading programs
● Successful teaching experience at the elementary level
● Knowledge and experience with a workshop approach to literacy
● Knowledge of a variety of phonics and word study programs
● Experienced with differentiation of instruction, particularly with students with learning differences
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills
● Excellent organizational and planning skills
● Demonstrates a growth mindset
Essential Functions:
Promote the best interests of each child in the Lower School within the context of the Mission Statement and the Founding Tenets.
● With the HOLS, AHOLS, and DAI, oversee the vertical alignment of the literacy program, B-4
● Provide direct support and guidance for teachers with literacy instruction
● Provide daily small group reading and spelling support for identified, at-risk students
● Collaborates with HOLS and DAI to determine best assessment tools for students and data-driven best practices
● Administer and score various reading inventories and benchmarks
● Acts as coach/resource teacher to support implementation and fidelity of the literacy curriculum
● Creates student intervention plans collaboratively with classroom teachers; model lessons for teachers and conduct in-house training sessions for teachers
● Models lessons for teachers
● Meet with classroom teachers and parents at parent conferences as-needed
● Works with Head of LS and Associate Head of LS to develop goals for literacy teachers and plan for professional development
● Serve on the LS Leadership Team
● Performs other duties as assigned
