The Assistant Teacher is a non-exempt, hourly position reporting directly to the teacher(s) in whose classroom(s) they are assigned. This role requires the highest level of discretion and confidentiality in all matters. As an employee of The Gooden School, the Assistant Teacher is expected to embody and promote the school motto: “Respect for self, Respect for others, and Respect for the world” in all aspects of their work.

This document provides an overview of the responsibilities and duties associated with the position. While the list below includes key responsibilities, the Assistant Teacher may be assigned additional tasks by the supervising teacher(s) or Head of School.

As a member of The Gooden School staff, the Assistant Teacher will:

  1. Classroom Support
    • Follow the guidance and directions of the teacher(s) they support.
    • Assist the Lead Teacher in planning, organizing, and implementing engaging age-appropriate lessons and activities.
    • Prepare and organize materials needed for daily lessons and classroom activities.
    • Assist in maintaining a physically and emotionally safe classroom and playground environment that reflects effective management strategies.
    • Actively support and promote academic, social, and emotional growth in all students.
    • Monitor and support students during transitions, recess, and lunch.
  2. Instructional Contribution
    • Collaborate with teacher(s) to maximize instructional time and effectiveness.
    • Learn and apply effective, engaging instructional strategies that address diverse student needs.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of current educational theories and best practices, showing a commitment to professional growth.
    • Provide individualized attention to students who need extra support.
  3. Behavioral Guidance
    • Model, teach, and encourage age-appropriate, disciplined behaviors aligned with the school’s mission.
    • Set high expectations for students while respecting their individual abilities and needs.
  4. Engagement and Collaboration
    • Build meaningful relationships with all students to support their development.
    • Actively cooperate with and support colleagues across all departments.
    • Promote diversity, respect, and understanding of different backgrounds and perspectives.
  5. Administrative and School-Wide Responsibilities
    • Attend Chapel services regularly and participate in other school events as required.
    • Support positive relationships with parents and maintain collegial relationships with teachers, staff, and administrators.
    • Be punctual and dependable for carpool, recess, lunch duties, and other assigned tasks.
    • Assist with duties for absent teachers or staff and provide preparation support for special events.
    • Complete assigned record-keeping and administrative tasks promptly and accurately.
    • Serve on ad hoc committees and attend staff meetings, in-service sessions, and professional development activities as requested.
  6. Commitment to School Values
    • Understand and respect the core principles and qualities of an Episcopal school.
    • Adhere to the policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
    • Exhibit a strong commitment to the school’s mission and values.

Professional Expectations

  • Be available during the in-service week before the start of the school year and throughout the final month of the regular school year for meetings and/or professional development, as requested.
  • Act as a representative of The Gooden School, exemplifying its values in daily interactions with students, families, and colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with young children in an educational setting, preferably in a kindergarten classroom.
  • A passion for early childhood education and a nurturing, patient demeanor.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take direction from the Lead Teacher.
  • A commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or certification in early childhood education or a related field.
  • Familiarity with developmentally appropriate teaching strategies.
