St. Margaret’s Day School (SMDS) is a non-profit, nationally accredited day school serving children ages 2-6 in grades Pre-K through Kindergarten.  SMDS is committed to providing exceptional early learning experiences in a nurturing and safe environment.  We are seeking a dedicated and experienced early childhood school director to lead our school. The Director will oversee all aspects of day school operations, ensuring adherence to accreditation standards, state licensing requirements, and the school’s educational philosophy.  The Director serves as Chief of Operations and Instructional Leader who collaboratively focuses on all staff, resources, and services advancing our Mission. The Director reports to the St. Margaret’s Day School Board of Trustees, the Vestry of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, and the Rector of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Program Oversight: Provide leadership and strategic direction for all school operations including day school operations, summer camp operations, and after-school programs.
  • Curriculum & Quality Assurance: Oversee the design and implementation of a high-quality, developmentally appropriate curriculum, maintaining national accreditation standards and ensuring continuous program improvement.
  • Staff Supervision & Development: Recruit, train, and mentor a team of passionate early childhood educators and support staff, fostering a positive work environment and encouraging professional growth.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure compliance with all state and national licensing regulations, health and safety protocols, and accreditation standards, maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for children and staff.
  • Budget Management: Oversee financial operations, including budgeting, tuition, and payroll, working to maintain financial sustainability and affordability for families.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in early childhood education, with experience in leadership or administrative role.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education best practices, curriculum development, and child development principles.
  • Familiarity with national accreditation processes (e.g., NAEYC accreditation) and state licensing requirements.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to collaboratively lead a team of teachers to nurture students and provide an exceptional educational experience.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing a budget.
  • CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • Comply with Maryland COMAR requirements for directors of pre-schools (CLICK HERE).
