The Gooden School seeks a part-time Business Manager to oversee all school financial operations and work with the Business Office Associate who handles payroll, accounts payable and receivable, tuition, and after-school finances. The Gooden School is accredited by CAIS and is an independent Episcopal K-8 school in Sierra Madre, CA. The school is a vibrant learning community of approximately 180 students. The school’s commitment to educating the whole child through rigorous academics and rich co-curricular programs including arts, athletics, foreign language, and spiritual development make it one of the best elementary schools in the San Gabriel Valley. 

The Business Manager is responsible for overseeing all facets of the accounting and financial management.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparation of the annual budget
  • Preparation of monthly and year-end financial statements
  • Assist with the preparation of annual reviewed financial statements, tax returns, and audit
  • Serve as the liaison with the school’s insurance representatives regarding specific issues
  • Serve on the school’s Leadership team
  • Act as Staff Liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to safeguard the viability of the school and help translate its mission and vision into financially sound action
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure that all business office procedures meet or exceed the best practices for independent schools
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to monitor the budget to ensure sound fiscal management practices take place
  • Follow all office protocols and cooperate with other administrative staff members
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team and the Senior Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations to monitor accounting for the Annual Fund, endowment fund, and capital campaigns to ensure that gifts of cash, stock, and gifts in kind are applied to appropriate categories in compliance with the school’s Gift Acceptance Policy
  • Supervise the recording of all income receipts and expenditures, bill paying, and payroll processing

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Strong background in accounting
  • Experience in an educational or non-profit setting is preferred
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent time-management skills
  • The salary range is $40-$70 per hour depending on experience
