Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Position Summary Description

The part-time seasonal admissions interviewer will be joining a dynamic admissions team responsible for recruiting, selecting and enrolling a talented group of middle and high school students. This person will have the opportunity to be the face of the School while engaging with prospective families. They will be responsible for being a positive and professional representative of the School, interviewing prospective students on campus or virtually, answering questions from prospective parents/guardians, and writing interview reports in a timely manner. Reporting to the Senior Assistant Director of Admissions, this part-time interviewer will play a critical role in the assessment of a student’s candidacy; the interview is an important component of the holistic application review process, determining whether the prospective students and their families are mission- and values-aligned with the School.

Interviews are primarily offered within the school day, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with additional virtual interviews possible in the evenings as well as on occasional weekends depending on the interviewer’s availability. The part-time interviewer’s schedule will be set in advance based on availability, but they must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Must be able to work during the admissions season, October through February. Training in interviewing, interview report-writing, the admissions process, the School, and implicit bias will be provided in onboarding sessions.

 

Essential Functions and Specific Duties

  • Conduct 10-15 admissions interviews per week in a professional and courteous manner;
  • Foster a warm and inviting atmosphere for prospective students and their families, engaging with them to understand their backgrounds/interests and assessing their compatibility with the School community;
  • Provide accurate and authentic answers to questions from prospective students and their families about the School’s academic and extracurricular programs, culture and community, and selection process;
  • Complete a detailed write-up that addresses the student’s/ family’s potential fit with the School following each interview in a timely fashion;
  • Maintain confidentiality and a high level of integrity in a highly-sensitive process;
  • Quickly acquire knowledge of the School’s academic and co-curricular offerings, while staying up to date on campus news;
  • Remain customer-service focused and flexible in day to day office operations;
  • Maintain open communication with Admissions Office Manager who schedules interviews;
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with independent school or college/university admissions is strongly preferred
  • At least 2 years of professional experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • A firm commitment to provide exemplary services in a demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and Zoom
  • Desire to learn and grow as an admissions professional
  • Demonstrate resourcefulness and commitment to confidentiality
  • Demonstrate proven record of project management and self-reliance
  • Knowledge of The Bishop’s School is strongly preferred
  • Other language fluency, such as Chinese or Spanish, is a plus
