Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Anticipated Annualized Base Compensation Depending on Experience: $80,000 – $95,000

Position Summary Description

The Bishop’s School seeks a Learning Specialist for the 2025-2026 school year, beginning August 1, 2025. Responsible for supporting students’ academic and personal growth and development using age-appropriate strategies and tools and to account for learning differences; working with parents, families, and external consultants to liaise and ensure alignment between home and school; supporting faculty members; staying abreast of current strategies and supports for academic success, educational technology, and learning differences; and completing administrative tasks as necessary to ensure that the mission of Learning Services/The Learning Center is fulfilled.

Essential Functions and Specific Duties

Commitment to the School’s rigorous academic and co-curricular programs.
Strong advocate of the School’s mission and school values of integrity, compassion, inclusion, intellect, excellence and justice.
Effectively coordinate, plan, organize and instruct students individually and in small groups to help them develop study skills, strategies, and other relevant competencies.
Maintain confidential, accurate, detailed, and complete records of student support and individual growth and development.
Adhere to professional standards in keeping students, parents, and teachers informed and updated in a timely manner concerning student growth and development.
Participate in professional development opportunities to stay abreast of current trends and new approaches to learning and neurodiversity.
Incorporate educational and assistive technologies in student support.
Serve as an advisor to assigned students in either the Middle or Upper School (approximately 12 students) as needed.
Participate and collaborate in and contribute to departmental discussions.
Represent School at professional organization(s) and/or School events as requested by the Head of School or his/her designee.
Participate in a program of professional evaluation of pedagogical practice, as led by supervisor and/or Academic Administrators.
Collaborate with the Learning Services team and Directors of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice to support the awareness and importance of neurodiversity in the school community.
Collaborate with team members, refer students and provide all necessary communications and information related to student success to the Director of Teaching & Learning and Student Services team as needed.
Be present on campus on scheduled School and professional development days at least 10 minutes prior to first class or meeting until the end of the academic day, and hold assigned classes as scheduled.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Bachelor’s degree required, advance degree(s) preferred.
Minimum of five years’ experience as a teacher or in a similar role.
Experience with exceptionality, neurodiversity, special education, and independent schools is a plus.
Must be available for occasional evening and weekend meetings and events.
High level of expertise in student support.
Dedicated work ethic: proactive, responsible, reliable and attentive to timeliness and deadlines.
Motivated, highly organized, and self-directed individual who can effectively multitask and handle a variety of matters independently in a professional, trustworthy and mature manner with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate judgment.
Ability to actively collaborate with all school constituencies.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Flexibility, creativity, ability to problem solve, with an emphasis on collaboration and adolescent support.
Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, and willingness to become proficient in new programs, learning management systems, collaboration and productivity apps as needed.
Willingness and ability to complete administrative tasks as needed to support students and The Learning Center.
Embrace the special needs and requirements associated with an academic calendar and schedule which may necessitate fluctuations in workdays and hours.
