Saint Mark’s School is an independent, Episcopal coeducational day school in Altadena, California. Founded in 1960, the School serves the needs of approximately 300 Preschool through Sixth grade students from diverse ethnic, racial, religious and economic backgrounds. The School’s mission is to develop the unique intellect and character of each student in a nurturing environment committed to academic excellence, respect for diversity, responsibility and spiritual growth.The School is seeking a nurturing and energetic preschool associate teacher to learn from and contribute to a vibrant school community. The preschool associate teacher is responsible for assisting preschool classroom teachers and grade level cohorts in the care and supervision of preschool students. The preschool associate teacher must be warm and friendly; able to relate to and work well with both children and adults; be willing to take direction from the teacher and administration, and show initiative for important parts of the preschool program and operation of the school. The preschool associate teacher must be professionally prepared to meet the social and emotional health and safety conditions necessary to operate a quality preschool program.

The preschool associate teacher is a non-exempt position that reports directly to the preschool director and will be evaluated and supported by the preschool director in collaboration with the lead teacher.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Acts in a manner corresponding to the requirements of the Employee Handbook of Saint Mark’s School or the requests of the head of school, assistant head of school, or preschool director.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity and equity, fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive classroom and actively contributing to a healthy, equitable environment for all members of the community. 
  • Demonstrates professionalism through punctuality, collaboration, organization, participation in meetings, and staff development opportunities. Maintains professional behavior, including appropriate dress, good judgment, integrity, diplomacy, confidentiality, and a respectful attitude in professional relationships 
  • Assists with planning and implementing a developmentally age-appropriate program for the class to which the associate teacher is assigned. 
  • Independently supervises an area of activities as set forth by the lead teacher.  Assists the lead teacher in other appropriate ways.
  • Relates professionally to each child, parents and other staff.
  • Shows respect for each individual child and implements school and playground rules and behavior expectations in a professional manner consistent with the School’s philosophy. Handles student work and possessions with care.
  • Assists in maintaining a neat, clean, comfortable, and child-oriented classroom atmosphere, which is appealing in terms of appearance, learning environment and decor.
  • Supervises children in the classroom and on the playground in a manner that is conducive to the Title 22 health and safety standards. Reports potential hazards or health and safety issues to the lead teacher or preschool director. 
  • Provides necessary set-up and clean-up of classroom areas and materials used in each day’s activity or project.
  • Helps with setting-up and putting away outdoor play materials and equipment.
  • Provides observations to the lead teacher that may indicate a student’s potential learning or developmental vulnerabilities. 
  • Assumes an equal share of the housekeeping/set-up responsibilities of the staff.
  • Prepares and cleans up the snack daily, which may include the preparation of food, properly storing leftover food, cleaning up of the preparation area and utensils.
  • Completes clerical tasks and learns and operates office equipment and technology as assigned.
  • Arrives promptly at assigned time, follows daily schedule, and completes daily tasks, not to extend beyond regularly scheduled hours 
  • Completes required training CPR, Pediatric First Aid and Preventive Health Course, mandatory reporting, pesticide training, harassment, and all other required training and subsequent renewals when needed. Administers basic first aid when necessary.
  • Attends all designated staff meetings, in-services, licensing training and school programs, as directed.
  • Pursues ongoing professional growth.
  • Supervises and assists during snack and lunch times.
  • Supervises children during nap and assists with the setting-up, putting away, and cleaning of nap cots. Keeps a quiet restful atmosphere in the room.
  • Exhibits willingness to take on other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Applicants must meet the Title 22 requirement of a fully (12 core ECE units) or partially qualified teacher (6 core ECE units, taking continuing ECE courses to become a fully qualified teacher)
  • Experience working in early childhood education and general knowledge of Title 22 Licensing Regulations
  • Knowledge of early childhood development, developmentally appropriate practice, and classroom management and assessment
Preferred Skills and Qualities:

  • Associate degree or higher in early childhood education or child development is preferred with a desire for continuing education
  • Possession of valid Pediatric CPR and Pediatric First Aid Certificate
  • Willingness to try new things and open to constructive feedback
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional training in diversity, equity, and inclusion

Physical Abilities:

Job includes some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting low on the ground and/or crawling; hearing, speaking, observing and significant fine finger dexterity. Specific abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus. Generally, the job requires 15% sitting, 40% walking and 45% standing and the ability to lift or move 50 pounds. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere. 

Hourly Rate:  $19.10 – $21.50 per hour
