St. Stephen’s STEM Teacher Featured by TERC

Mrs. Jenny Diaz, STEM teacher at St. Stephen’s, completed a project with her Kindergarten class based on the book The Animals Would Not Sleep, written by Sara Levine and illustrated by Marta Álvarez Miguéns. After reading the story to her students, Jenny challenged her students to design beds for their favorite stuffed animals. Students became problem solvers as their designs took shape. They incorporated skills such as measurement, scale, and model building to begin the process. It came time for construction so students could make their vision into reality. Family and school members joined in for the culminating event, a showcase where students explained their design thinking process, math principles, materials selected, and the challenges they had to overcome.
